CONTINUING EDUCATION

SBFD 3-year Review of Specialty Recognition
Guidelines for Continuing Education Credits (CEUs)

Initial Board Certification by the SBFD is granted for a three year period, after which renewal can be obtained based on documentation of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) and maintenance of clinical activities. Renewal requires documentation of 4.5 CEUs (45 contact hours) during this three year period.

Six broad areas of activity can be credited toward renewal; meetings; workshops; post Masters degree courses audited; post Masters degree courses taken for credit; presentations; workshops; publications. The 4.5 CEU requirement can be met by activities in a single area or may be distributed across all six areas.

The intent of the CEU requirement is that specialists will engage in continuing education activities that update and further enhance their ability to serve people who stutter. For this reason, a significant proportion of the CEU requirement must be in activities directly related to fluency and fluency disorders. At the same time, it is recognized that continuing education activities in others of knowledge and practice can contribute to quality of practice in stuttering. For this reason, up to 1.0 CEUs outside the area of fluency and fluency disorders can be applied to meet CEU requirements for renewal.

The following section summarizes and provided examples of activities that can meet SBFD requirements. Please note that the activities listed under each continuing education category are only examples; they do not represent an exhaustive listing of acceptable activities. If applicants are uncertain about the acceptability of activities, they should contact the Board for clarification before submitting their renewal materials.

General Guidelines for Continuing Education Renewal Activities

  • 4.5 CEUs must be earned in a three year period to meet the requirements for renewal.
  • At least 3.5 of the 4.5 CEUs must be in activities that explicitly address fluency or fluency disorders. Up to 1.0 of the 4.5 CEUs may be in others areas of practice (counseling, course development, electronic devices for therapy, outcome measure development, health care administration/reform issues).
